Engineering Design is for Everyone
Imagine elementary and middle school science classrooms where students are busy tinkering, designing, trying out ideas, revising and trying again. First graders building devices to use light to communicate over a distance, fourth graders creating M&M dispensers for space, and eighth graders designing devices to prevent blood clots during knee surgery. There is an energetic buzz of conversation in the air that is rich and interesting. Students are choosing a variety of technologies to support their work. All the while students are engaging in the practices of engineering, they are obtaining science concepts, developing 21st century skills and growing a passion for science.
The Next Generation Science Standards call for engineering design to take a fundamental role in the nation's science classrooms. |
